Honduras Real Estate, Vacationing and Investing
Honduras is made up of approximately 81% mountainous territory. The name Honduras comes from the Spanish word, which literally means "depths". It is said that Honduras was named for a famous quote made by Christopher Columbus, "Gracias a Dios que hemos salido de esas Honduras", which translates in English to, "Thank God we have come out of those depths". In those days, traversing such mountainous terrain was difficult, to say the least. In modern times, Honduras offers some of the most amazing and extensive hiking expeditions in all of the Americas.
While the highlands make up most of the countries regions, Honduras has much more to offer. The Caribbean Sea bordering the eastern coast provides excellent deep seas fishing and miles of beaches. Islas de la Bahía and the Swan Islands contain a multitude of isles, with sandy white beaches and phenomenal sunsets, north of the inland coast. The La Mosquitia region to the northwest presents an undeveloped, lowland jungle.
Honduras is exceptionally bio-diverse, being home to more than 6,000 vascular plant species, 630 of which are orchids. Approximately 250 reptiles and amphibian species reside in Honduras, along with 700+ bird species and 110 varieties of mammals. More than half of the mammal species in Honduras are bats. The Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve, referred to by many as "The Last Lungs of Central America", is located within the jungles of the La Mosquitia region.
Tourists will find no lack of activities and natural wonders to be seen. From the magnificent archeological ruins of Mayan culture to the beaches of the Caribbean, the tourism industry is steadily growing.
Honduras is bordered by Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest and Nicaragua to the southeast. On the southern coast lies the Gulf of Fonseca, opening into the Pacific Ocean. The Gulf of Honduras, an inlet to the Caribbean Sea, lies to the north.
